Secrets of the
Suitcase
At Marian College a group of VCAL students explored making a suitcase
that represented themselves.
We thought about
the things that make us who we are.
If you were going
off to a distant land with only a suitcase,
like so many of
our ancestors,
what would be in
it?
And what would
this say about you?

statements about the work
This is my art work
The reason why I chose these colours on my box is
because they’re my
favourite colours, I also chose to do pink on the outside and purple on
the inside. Because I feel like pink is such a bright colour and I am
very bright person so it represents me.

This is my art box.
The reason why I have chosen to do my box this way is because it
expresses all the things I love, whether it’s from colour to music.
The reason why I have chosen to paint the inside of my box purple is
because it’s my favourite colour. The music notes on the outside of my box is
there because it states that I like any kind of music
Tahlie
This box I made has ribbons, feathers and ice pole sticks, pictures,
buttons and some felt. The pictures are of One Direction because they
are my favourite band.

This is my box that I made, it has things that I like. It has buttons, beads,
ice pole sticks and pictures. The pictures are of Greece, which is the country
I come from and some inspirational pictures.
Angela
I made this box from scratch. It was originally just two hard pieces of
cardboard. It didn’t take me long at all to put it all together. The thing that
took me the longest was to attach the pages from books to it. I decided to put
the pages from books on the outside instead of painting it to let it have the
vintage look that is also why its lock is two screws and a piece of wire. I
honestly hate reading but I find that look I made interesting and
different.

My work is about connecting specific locations
with memories of persons I have traveled with, conversations, scenes flashing
by, wind through open windows and changing seasons. These are compartmentalised
within my mind, within this box

My suitcase is about life, journeys and experiences.
Ember
I like feathers so I just put feathers on it. I like to eat fruit, so I put the
fruit inside of the suitcase.
Achan
My box has different pictures representing love, families and fashion. I
like pretty stuff and I want to be a fashion designer.
Awein
I was on the bus one day and I made a pigeon noise. Someone thought it was a
pigeon and soon everyone was looking for it. So now I make pigeon noises more
often.

Marissa
Exquisite Me is an arts project that explores the collective experiences, stories and representations of identities of young people in Sunshine and Brimbank. These experiences, stories and representations will be explored during various art and writing workshops run by community artist Debbie Qadri. The artwork and writing will be displayed as a large collaborative work, in a number of venues in Sunshine, including Gallery Sunshine Everywhere. Some of the artwork and writing will be published in a zine format and also made into an artist’s book for the Sunshine Library. Workshops will be held at schools, community groups and at Council facilities such as the Sunshine Library .

The self portraits were painted onto three canvases, so that they could be swapped around to make more portraits of people, as a metaphor for shared experiences and identities.
